Lockdown Afro Hair Care and Maintenance Tips

The wonderful thing about afro-hair is it’s versatile, but it also means you need specific tips to look after your hair during the lockdown. We’ve put together tips to looking after your hair.

1. Natural Hair and General Hair Maintenance

Since people are not going out that much, lockdown hair is generally not that polluted so you should cleanse and condition your hair about every 4 weeks.

To cleanse use either Keracare Hydrating detangling shampoo, Design Essential detangling shampoo or Moroccan Oil Moisture shampoo. Shampoo twice and towel dry before applying conditioner.

Condition and treat your hair by applying conditioner to sections of towel dry hair, preferably leave the conditioner on hair and cover with a plastic cap for about 30mins to an hour. Body heat will activate the product to penetrate into the hair shaft. Rinse out the conditioner, moisturise and style.

The key focus is to maintain moisture all the time.

2. Relaxed Hair

Relaxed hair is normally due for processing every 8 -10 weeks but since the lockdown, most people won’t be able to chemically process their own hair. If your hair is due for processing try not to do it yourself at home as it can result in breakage. There will still be a risk of breakage if the hair is left unprocessed for too long. So to reduce this risk treat your hair every 2-3 weeks as normal and then keep in a protective styling e.g. 2 big cane rows or 2 strand twist.  Key is to keep the roots moist.

Short relaxed hair is more challenging because you cant easily put in protective styling. Still treat your hair by applying conditioner to sections of towel dry hair, preferably leave the conditioner on hair and cover with a plastic cap for about 30mins to an hour.  Body heat will activate the product to penetrate into the hair shaft.

Rinse out the conditioner, moisturise and wrap.

Do not use a flat iron to style the regrowth. The most important thing is to keep your roots moist to help slow down the risk of breakage.

Use Keracare Night time treatment for the already processed hair only.

Hairdress can be used to keep regrowth moistures, products to use are Keracare Hairdress, Mizani Hairdress or Design Essential Hairdress.

3. Coloured Hair

With regards to colour, we don’t advise you to colour your own hair at home. Treat every 2 -3 weeks by applying a conditioner to sections of towel dry hair, preferably leave the conditioner on hair and cover with a plastic cap for about 30mins to an hour. Body heat will activate the product to penetrate into the hair shaft. Rinse out the conditioner, moisturise and style.

Use a shampoo specifically for colour treated hair, this will make your colour last longer and shine.

For relaxed and coloured hair, treat with a mixture of 50/50 moisture and protein every 4 weeks. (Mix a Keracare Humecto conditioner and Affirm 5in1) apply to sections of towel dry hair, preferably leave the mixture on hair and cover with a plastic cap for about 30mins to an hour. Body heat will activate the product to penetrate into the hair shaft. Rinse out the mixture, moisturise and style.

4. Kerastraight Hair Smoothing

Still treat your hair with a moisture-based conditioner. Apply conditioner to sections of towel dry hair, preferably leave the conditioner on hair and cover with a plastic cap for about 30mins to an hour. Body heat will activate the product to penetrate into the hair shaft.

Rinse out the conditioner, moisturise and style with a serum type, don’t use a moisture product to style.

5. Weaves/ Plaits

We advise you not to leave your weave or plait in for more than 8 weeks. Take out the weave or plaits and either follow the natural hair or relaxed hair sections detailed above.

We can’t wait to welcome you back but until then please keep safe and beautiful.
